EMMETSBURG COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

Regular Meeting 

Board of Education

May 13, 2026

 

The Board of Education of Emmetsburg Community School District met in a regular session on May 13, 2026 at 6:31 am  in the Central Office Board Room. 

 

Present: Bill Huberty, Morgan Grimm, Sarah Brugman, Kyle Caven, Brian Brown, 

                          Bruce Nelson, Val Morton

Absent:  

Also Present:  Cory Jenness, Alyssa Enderson, Tracie Christensen, Kari Menefee

 

Kyle Caven, Board President called the meeting to order at 6:30 am. 

 

APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Motion by Nelson to approve the agenda as presented. Seconded by Brugman. All voted affirmative. Motion carried. 

 

Val Morton arrived at 6:32 am

 

PUBLIC FORUM: No members from the community were present.

 

CONSENT ITEMS: SBO Enderson presented the consent items and reports. Huberty motioned to approve the consent items including: April board minutes, Claims, Board Reports, and Donations. Seconded by Brown.  All voted affirmative. Motion carried.

 

OLD BUSINESS

 

Second Reading Board Policies: Jenness reviewed Board policies 602.1-603.12  that were discussed at the Policy Development Committee meeting. Motion by Grimm to approve second reading. Seconded by Brugman.  All voted affirmative. Motion carried.

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

First Reading Board Policies: Jenness reviewed board policies 604.1-605.1R1 that were discussed at the Policy Development Committee meeting. The second reading will be held at the regular June board meeting. 

 

STOP Training Resolution: Motion by Grimm to approve the decision to not require S.T.O.P. training for the district’s school bus drivers for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 school years. Seconded by Nelson;  Ayes: Caven, Brown, Morton, Nelson, Grimm, Brugman, and Huberty, Nays: None. The motion passed by a vote of 7/0.

 

Termination of Real Estate Property Contract: Motion by Brugman to approve the termination of the contract for real estate for the Newhouse property. Seconded by Nelson. All members voted in favor. Motion carried. 

 

Location for Proposed Elementary School: Motion by Grimm to pursue the Kassel property as the potential New Elementary School site. Seconded by Brugman. All members voted in favor. Motion carried. 

 

Storm Protection Resolution: Morton motioned to approve joining the Storm Protection Fund consortium..  Huberty seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. Roll Call vote- Caven, Brown, Morton, Nelson, Grimm, Brugman, and Huberty. Motion carried. 

 

Summer School- Elementary: Brugman motioned to approve the Elementary Summer school plan as presented. Nelson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. Motion carried. 

 

Administrative Contracts: Grimm motioned to approve the Administrative Contracts as recommended from the Finance Committee. Brown seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. Motion carried. 

 

Personnel: Motion by Morton to approve the following resignations: Patty Kelly- retiring Paraeducator, Matt Wirtz- Paraeducator, and Charla Montag- Prom Sponsor and the following New Hires: Samantha Gade- Head Varsity Volleyball Coach; and the following internal transfer- Dawn Daniels from Special Education to ½ time Title. Seconded by Brown. All members voted in favor. Motion carried. 

 

Open Enrollment Requests: Motion by Nelson to approve the Open Enrollment Requests as presented. Seconded by Grimm. All members voted in favor. Motion carried.

 

TEACHING & LEARNING

 

Administrative Reports: Building Administrators shared their monthly reports. Activity Director Hewitt presented the monthly athletic report. Student Board member Danica Ringlaben presented the Student Board Member report. 

 

Board Learning: None. 

 

ADDITIONAL ITEMS 

 

Next Board Meeting is June 17th at 6:30 AM

ADJOURNMENT:  Huberty motioned to adjourn the meeting at 7:32 am. Second Caven. All voted in favor. Motion carried.
